St. Johns County has a real craft beer scene for a county its size, with breweries downtown, along US 1, on Anastasia Island and in the north county plazas, plus a distillery district on the edge of downtown St. Augustine. The bar scene downtown is concentrated around St. George, Hypolita, Spanish and Charlotte Streets, with rooftop and bayfront spots for sunset. Beach bars line A1A at St. Augustine Beach, Vilano and Crescent Beach. The north county, including Nocatee, Julington Creek and Ponte Vedra, leans toward taprooms, sports bars and restaurant bars that close earlier. Bars in St. Johns County generally stop serving at 2 a.m. and many close earlier on weeknights. Rideshare is the safe plan downtown, and parking enforcement does not take the night off.
Pick the kind of night
A brewery taproom at 5 p.m. with a food truck and kids running around is a different place from a Hypolita Street bar at midnight. Decide on the crowd and the closing time you want first.
Check the food situation
Many taprooms have no kitchen and rely on food trucks or let you bring food in. Others run full menus. If dinner matters, look at the week's truck schedule or pick a brewpub.
Look at the event calendar
Trivia, bingo, live music, run clubs and release nights change the crowd and the noise. Breweries post weekly schedules on social media. A Tuesday trivia night can be busier than a Friday.
Plan the ride home
Downtown St. Augustine and the beach bars are a rideshare situation after a couple of drinks, and the county enforces DUI hard. Budget 15 to 30 dollars each way from downtown to the north county.
Ask about flights and happy hour
Most breweries pour 4 to 5 ounce flights so you can try several beers for 12 to 18 dollars. Restaurant bars run weekday happy hours from about 3 to 6 p.m. Taprooms often do not, but have cheaper pints to begin with.
