What a true Treasure of Green Cove Springs! If you have any interest in history, you owe it to yourself to make a visit here. Staff & Volunteers are a sweet bunch of folks here, Pat is full of knowledge and such a delight to get to Chat with! Ask for her to lead you around and educate you when you visit, we enjoyed listening to her so very much. The rooms are filled to the brim with History here, best museum I’ve visited. We parked across the street behind the property in the gravel parking lot and there is plenty of free parking there. If you want to read & really absorb this museum, budget at least 3 hours for your visit! - we plan to come back again a few more visits to take more of it in, and to bring a cash donation. There is No Fee charged, but places like this only stay available to the public via donations, so please if you read this and then visit, bring a handful of some dollars with you to place into one of the donation boxes. We stopped on the way home from the CrossFit Green Cove gym and were unprepared to provide a donation & we didn’t realize in advance of arriving how amazing this place would truly be. Ok, so here are a few highlights: Doll collection, Music room, old clothes and cooking displays, railroad displays, OMG - so many I can’t remember them all, you must stop and see for yourself! Then touring the old Jail, super cool! Believe me, this is well worth a stop! My photos tell more of how cool this place really is, scroll them and see!
Amazing experience - five stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Stop in and see Ms Jess for an educational tour of the grounds, including the old Jail... We are excited to see the museum renovations once they are complete. 🫶
This is a wonderful museum! There’s the old jail, which is super creepy but awesome to walk through. Then there’s the old rail car and actual museum with lots of old photos of clay county. There’s parking available.
My husband and I had a wonderful afternoon today at the Clay County Historical Society History and Railroad Museum in Green Cove Springs. It was so interesting and educational. The volunteers were so helpful, outgoing and very knowledgeable about the history and artifacts in all the buildings. We are so impressed that Clay County has preserved this area know as the Historic Triangle which includes the History Museum, Veterans Memorial, the 1894 Jail/Archives and the 1890 Historic Courthouse. A big thank you to all the volunteers that make it possible to vist this amazing site that is part of our history in Green Cove Springs.
This is an entire complex of buildings, comprising an old jail(haunted), the county archives, an old courthouse, a railroad museum, and the Clay County Historical Society, with many artifacts both donated and discovered, deeds, wills, old maps, numerous photographs and a few very enthusiastic volunteers. It's only open on Sunday afternoons from 2 to 5 which is a shame, but the president of the Historical Society is completely okay with giving guided tours by appointment on other days. I brought my son today and he loved it. We spent nearly 2 hours there and could have stayed longer. The museum is in it's own building and features themed rooms. Want to see a country store, with 19th century goods and tools? This is the place. Slim Whitman grew up around here. Come see his guitars, his gold albums, and 3 walls worth of memorabilia. Railroad stuff? They got it. Old lanterns, switches, conductors hats and uniforms. There's plenty of parking and admission is free. Toss some money in the jar by the door though. It's well worth it. Stop by on a Sunday afternoon. You'll be glad you did!
