Ribs? Good. Tender, moderate flavor. Collards? Good. Pleasing. Brunswick stew? Ok. Different than others. More like spicy tomato vegetable soup. Green beans? Worst I've ever put in my 63 year old mouth. Truly. Those would make my granny cry. Even my Yankee mother-in-law would have shaken her head in pity. As if somebody rinsed a #10 can of generic low sodium green beans, filled it back up with water, dumped it in a pot and heated it on low for 10 minutes. Then, as an afterthought, squirted in some pickled pepper juice (whaaaat? Is that what that off-putting sour taste was?) to say they tried. Those scattered tiny white cubes floating in there MIGHT be canned potatoes. An abomination. Just no. Just nasty. Save the tears of the Southern grannies. Stars deducted. Praying for your souls.
Overall, the experience was just okay. The Sweet Tea is absolutely delicious. When the food came to the table, all of it was room temperature or below which was incredibly disappointing. The ribs and pulled pork were tender and had good flavor. I was also pleased with the collard greens. The mac n cheese, sausage link, and green beans were simple, lightly seasoned and boring. Brisket is a hard meat to get right, and the portion we were served was definitely overcooked. There isn't enough BBQ sauce in the world to help a dry, overcooked brisket. I didn't particularly enjoy the taste of the baked beans either. When I see a restaurant serves peach cobbler, always think of it in the traditional Southern sense and always hope for an old-fashioned version with a crisp buttery crust, and cinnamon-spiced juicy center of sliced peaches. Their cobbler is definitely not that, opting for what seems to be an "easier" batter-style cake filling poured over peaches that produced a chewy rather than flaky dessert, and significantly lacked any depth of flavor. Although the story about Willie Jewell Daniels omitted significant details to have named an entire restaurant after her, the story is still more interesting than the atmosphere and food provided. That being said, if they took serious consideration to some of these reviews, I believe the restaurant could rank much higher in popularity amongst locals. The potential is definitely there.
I was driving with the family to Ft Lauderdale. It was lunchtime and we had just crossed the Florida line. We stopped at Willies and the food was amazing, especially the brisket. The corn fritters were great. They even had smoked turkey 1/4 for our miniature golden doodle.
So a few points: 1. The beef brisket had decent flavor, especially the fatty parts, but it was SO DRY 2. The collard greens weren't good at all, I can't even explain the taste... 3. The fries and toast was pretty solid, but being that I came for BBQ, those shouldn't be the best things I've had that day. I don't have any complaints about the service or the cleanliness of the place though! They have plenty of other things in the menu that may be good, but it's just that the ones that I ordered wasn't it
Food was excellent as well as the service but this is the 2nd time in a week I went in there once to pick up lunch that was a 15 min wait and it was very hot in there then Thursday night met some friends for dinner and it was ridiculously hot..the owners/managers/employees have to know as all the other customers were saying the same thing..when I said it's very hot in here it's the typical sorry..but you can tell they really dont care..that place is busy all the time and made about $50 on 2 sandwich meals and sprite on my take lunch and about $60 plus we always tip $5 or more before we leave..there's enough money for them to have ac..would be 5 🌟 if they had ac..was going out after dinner and we were all sweating to death..gonna give it another try and see if it changes because the food was good..if its the same we will just run to the pig 🐖 in Callahan because its good food and always cool..just will have to plan timing to back track when we want BBQ.
