Handymen in Keystone Heights, FL

How to choose a handyman in Keystone Heights

1. Know what a handyman can legally do in Florida

Unlicensed handymen can do cosmetic and minor repair work such as painting, drywall, trim, cabinets, screens, and assembling things. They cannot do electrical, plumbing, HVAC, roofing, structural, or most work that needs a permit. If someone offers to move a circuit or replace a water heater without a license, that is a problem for you, not just them. When unsure, ask St. Johns County Building Services.

2. Ask for insurance even for small jobs

A handyman on a ladder repairing soffit or on your roof clearing a gutter is a liability if he falls. Ask for a general liability certificate and whether he carries workers compensation or an exemption. Many solo operators are exempt from workers comp but should still have liability coverage of at least a few hundred thousand dollars.

3. Batch your list and get an hourly rate

Most local handymen charge 65 to 110 dollars per hour with a one to two hour minimum, or a flat rate for common jobs. A list of six small items in one visit costs far less than six separate trips from Ponte Vedra to Hastings. Send photos ahead of time so he arrives with the right parts.

4. Look for someone who works your area regularly

Travel time is real in a county this spread out. A handyman based in St. Augustine may charge a trip fee to Julington Creek or decline the job. Find someone who already has customers in your neighborhood, and ask whether he is familiar with your builder's typical shortcuts if you live in a newer community.

5. Get the scope and price in a text or email

Even for a 200 dollar job, a quick written note listing what will be done, the rate, and who buys materials saves arguments. Pay on completion, not up front, except for special order parts. Reputable handymen do not ask for cash deposits on small repairs.
