How much do movers cost in St. Augustine?

Local moves in St. Johns County are usually hourly. In 2026 expect roughly 140 to 200 dollars per hour for two movers and a truck, and 190 to 280 per hour for three. A one bedroom apartment typically totals 500 to 1,000 dollars, a three bedroom house 1,400 to 3,000, and a large four or five bedroom home 3,000 to 6,000. Packing services, stairs, and long carries add to that.

Do movers in Florida need a license?

Yes for moves within the state. Florida requires household goods movers to register annually with the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, carry liability and cargo insurance, and give customers a written estimate and contract. Interstate movers must also hold federal USDOT and motor carrier authority. Ask for the registration number and confirm it online before you sign anything.

What is the cheapest day to move?

Weekdays in the middle of the month, outside of summer, are the least expensive and easiest to book. Weekends, the last few days of any month, and June through August are peak demand in St. Johns County because of school schedules and closing dates. If you have flexibility, a Tuesday or Wednesday in October or February can save 10 to 20 percent and get you a better crew.

Can movers hold my stuff hostage for more money?

Florida law prohibits a registered mover from charging more than the written estimate plus a limited overage without your agreement, and they cannot refuse to deliver if you pay the estimate amount. If a company demands cash far above the quote before unloading, do not pay it; call the Florida Department of Agriculture consumer line and the St. Johns County Sheriff's non-emergency number. This is why you check the registration first.

How far in advance should I book a mover?

Two to four weeks is enough most of the year. For a summer weekend, the end of a month, or a long distance move, book four to eight weeks out. New construction closings in Nocatee and the CR 210 area often slip, so pick a company that will let you move the date without a penalty if the builder is late.

Tipping is customary but not required. Around here 20 to 40 dollars per mover for a half day and 40 to 80 for a full day is typical, more for a brutal July move with a lot of stairs. Cold water and lunch are appreciated. Tip each crew member directly rather than handing one amount to the lead.

Moving Companies in Northeast Florida

St. Johns County has been one of the fastest growing counties in Florida for years, so moving companies here stay busy with people arriving in Nocatee, Silverleaf, Shearwater, and the CR 210 corridor, and with locals shuffling between St. Augustine, Ponte Vedra, and Julington Creek. The jobs that matter locally are new construction move-ins where the driveway is still dirt, downsizing out of Ponte Vedra Beach homes into condos, and cross-country arrivals with a truck that cannot fit under the trees on a Lincolnville street. Florida requires intrastate movers to register with the state, and the registration number should be on the truck and the estimate. Summer is peak season, heat makes everything slower, and afternoon storms soak cardboard in minutes. The best local movers plan around all of that.

How to choose a moving company in Northeast Florida

Verify the Florida mover registration

Any company moving household goods within Florida must be registered with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and show that number on advertising and paperwork. Interstate movers also need a USDOT number. Look the numbers up before you book. A company with neither is a van and two guys, and you have no recourse if your furniture ends up damaged or held.

Get a written estimate after a walk-through

Phone quotes for a four bedroom house in Nocatee are guesses. A real estimate comes after a video or in-person survey and lists the hourly rate, crew size, truck size, travel charge, and what counts as extra, such as stairs, long carries, or pianos. Florida law requires a written estimate before the move, so a company that will not provide one is a red flag.

Ask what happens on a rainy summer afternoon

From June through September it rains most afternoons. Good crews start at 7 or 8 am, bring floor runners and shrink wrap, and keep the truck backed up tight to the garage. Ask whether weather delays stop the clock on an hourly job and whether they will finish the same day if a storm pushes things back.

Match the truck to the street

A 26 foot truck cannot turn around on many downtown St. Augustine and Davis Shores streets, and some Vilano and Crescent Beach driveways are sand. Tell the company exactly where you are, including gate codes and any HOA rules about truck hours. Many Ponte Vedra condo buildings require an elevator reservation and a certificate of insurance before the crew arrives.

Understand the valuation coverage

Basic coverage from movers pays by the pound, often around 60 cents per pound per item, which is almost nothing for a flat screen or a dresser. Ask for full value protection pricing and check whether your homeowners or renters policy covers goods in transit. Take photos of furniture and electronics before the crew loads them.
