Question 1

What is the oldest church in St. Augustine?

Accepted Answer

The Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine traces its parish to 1565, making it the oldest Catholic parish in the continental United States; the current building dates to 1797 with later restoration. Mission Nombre de Dios marks the landing site of the first Spanish settlers. Several Protestant and African American congregations downtown also date to the 1800s. All welcome visitors outside of service times with posted hours.

Question 2

Can visitors attend Mass at the Cathedral Basilica?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The Cathedral Basilica on Cathedral Place holds regular weekend and weekday Masses that are open to the public, and the building is open for visitors much of the day. Check the parish website for the current schedule, since times shift around holidays and special events. Modest dress is appreciated, and the church asks visitors not to tour during services.

Question 3

How do I find a church near Nocatee or Ponte Vedra?

Accepted Answer

Nocatee and Ponte Vedra are served by Catholic parishes, several Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian and Anglican congregations, and a number of nondenominational churches, some meeting in schools and community spaces while they build. Many families also drive to churches along CR 210 or in Jacksonville Beach. Start with the denomination you want, then check service times and children's programs on each website.

Question 4

Do St. Augustine churches host weddings for non-members?

Accepted Answer

Policies vary by church and tradition. Some historic downtown churches host weddings for non-members with a fee and required preparation, while others limit weddings to members or to couples of their faith. Catholic parishes generally require at least one Catholic party and several months of preparation. Call the church office early, since popular downtown churches book many months ahead.

Question 5

Are there churches that offer help with food, rent or utilities in St. Johns County?

Accepted Answer

Several congregations and church-affiliated ministries in St. Augustine and across the county run food pantries, benevolence funds and referral programs, often in partnership with local nonprofits. Availability and requirements change, so call ahead or ask the church office which days assistance is offered. Dialing 211 also connects you with current local assistance resources.

Question 6

Are there non-Christian places of worship in St. Johns County?

Accepted Answer

Yes. St. Augustine has a Reform Jewish congregation and the Greek Orthodox St. Photios Shrine downtown, and the county has smaller communities of other faiths that often meet in homes or rented spaces. Jacksonville, about 40 minutes north, has mosques, Hindu and Buddhist temples and additional synagogues. Checking each community's website or calling ahead is the best way to confirm meeting times.
