How can I tell if a local charity is legitimate?

Check the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services charity registration lookup and the IRS tax exempt organization search. Legitimate groups share their registration number, address and board members, and never pressure you to give immediately. Be wary of solicitations after storms that use familiar names, and give through the organization's own website or office.

Are there nonprofits for veterans in St. Johns County?

Yes. With Naval Station Mayport and NAS Jacksonville nearby, the county has active veterans service organizations, including posts in St. Augustine, Ponte Vedra and the CR 210 area, plus nonprofits focused on housing, benefits help and peer support. The county's Veterans Service Office helps with VA claims at no charge. Call ahead for meeting schedules and eligibility.

Nonprofits in Jacksonville & Northeast Florida, FL

Nonprofits in Northeast Florida

St. Johns County is one of the wealthier counties in Florida on paper, and that hides real need in Hastings, Elkton, West Augustine, Lincolnville and among the service workers who keep the tourist economy running. Local nonprofits fill the gaps: food pantries and feeding programs, shelters and housing help, free clinics, youth programs, animal rescues, arts and historic preservation groups, environmental organizations working the beaches and the Matanzas and Guana estuaries, and veterans groups. People searching here are usually one of three things: someone who needs help today, someone in Nocatee or Ponte Vedra who wants to volunteer or give locally, or a founder trying to start a nonprofit and figure out the Florida paperwork. Most organizations are small, so a phone call usually gets further than a form.

How to choose a nonprofit in Northeast Florida

Be clear whether you are seeking help, giving or volunteering

Each path leads to a different contact at the same organization. If you need help, ask what documents to bring and whether you need an appointment. If you want to give or volunteer, ask what they are actually short on this month rather than guessing.

Verify the organization before you give

A legitimate Florida charity is registered with the state's Division of Consumer Services and most have IRS tax exempt status you can look up. Ask for the registration number if you are unsure, and be cautious of door-to-door or phone solicitations using a familiar local name.

Look at where the work happens

A nonprofit based in St. Augustine may do most of its work in West Augustine or Hastings, and some Jacksonville organizations serve the county too. If you want your time or money to stay local, ask what share of programs serve St. Johns County residents.

Ask how they measure results

Good small nonprofits can tell you plainly how many people they served, meals delivered, animals placed or students helped last year, and what it cost. Vague answers are not always a red flag, but a clear answer is a good sign.

For founders, get the paperwork order right

Starting a nonprofit in Florida means forming a nonprofit corporation with the state, applying to the IRS for tax exempt status, and registering with the state before soliciting donations. Local legal aid clinics and SCORE mentors in the area help first-time founders. When in doubt about a filing, ask the agency office rather than guess.

Nonprofit questions, answered by local experts

Where can I get food help in St. Johns County?

Several food pantries operate in St. Augustine, West Augustine, St. Augustine Beach, Hastings and along the CR 210 corridor, many run by churches and county-wide nonprofits with set distribution days. Hours change, so call ahead or dial 211 for the current list and what to bring. School based programs and senior meal services also run through the year, and demand rises every summer when tourism work slows.

How do I volunteer in St. Augustine or Nocatee?

Start with what you can do regularly, since most local nonprofits need steady weekly help more than one-time events. Food banks, animal rescues, the free clinic, literacy programs, beach and estuary cleanups, historic sites and youth sports all take volunteers. Many require a short orientation, and those working with children or vulnerable adults require a background check. Ask what shifts are hardest to fill.

Is there emergency housing or shelter help in St. Johns County?

The county has limited shelter capacity, mostly in and around St. Augustine, along with nonprofits that provide rent and utility assistance, transitional housing and help for people experiencing homelessness. Call 211 or the organizations directly to confirm availability, since beds and funds run out. During hurricane evacuations the county opens public shelters announced through emergency management, which is a separate system.

How do I start a nonprofit in Florida?

The usual order is to file nonprofit articles of incorporation with the Florida Division of Corporations, get an EIN, adopt bylaws and a board, apply to the IRS for 501(c)(3) or other exempt status, and register with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services before asking the public for donations. Expect state and federal filing fees and several months for IRS approval. Ask the agency or a nonprofit attorney if you are unsure of a step.
