Question 1

How much does an electrician charge per hour in St. Johns County?

Accepted Answer

Licensed electricians around St. Augustine and Ponte Vedra charge roughly 95 to 165 dollars per hour, with a service call fee of 75 to 150 dollars that often covers the first half hour or hour. Many quote flat rates for common tasks like outlet replacement, ceiling fan installs and breaker swaps. Emergency and weekend visits usually cost 1.5 to 2 times more.

Question 2

How much is a panel upgrade in St. Augustine?

Accepted Answer

Replacing a 100 or 150 amp panel with a new 200 amp panel typically costs 2,200 to 4,500 dollars in St. Johns County, including permit and inspection. Costs climb if the meter can and riser need replacing, if the utility requires a new service drop, or if the house has aluminum branch wiring that needs remediation at the same time.

Question 3

Will my insurance company make me replace my electrical panel?

Accepted Answer

Often yes, if a four-point inspection finds a Federal Pacific, Zinsco, Challenger or Sylvania panel, or significant double tapping and corrosion. Florida insurers have become strict about this on older St. Augustine, Vilano and St. Augustine Shores homes. The inspector's report will say what is required. A licensed electrician can quote the fix and supply the photos and permit record the insurer wants.

Question 4

Do I need a permit to install an EV charger at my house?

Accepted Answer

Yes. A Level 2 charger is a new 240 volt circuit, and St. Johns County and the cities require an electrical permit and inspection. Installed cost is usually 800 to 2,000 dollars depending on distance from the panel and whether you have spare capacity. HOAs in Nocatee, Palencia and similar communities may also want to approve exterior placement, so check your documents.

Question 5

How much does a whole-house generator cost in Northeast Florida?

Accepted Answer

A 22 to 26 kW standby generator on natural gas or propane, fully installed with transfer switch, pad, permits and gas hookup, runs about 12,000 to 20,000 dollars in St. Johns County. A manual interlock kit and inlet for a portable generator is far cheaper at 600 to 1,200 dollars. Hurricane season demand from June through November pushes lead times out, so quote in the spring.

Question 6

Is whole-house surge protection worth it here?

Accepted Answer

For most St. Johns County homes, yes. Northeast Florida gets some of the most lightning in the country, and a panel-mounted surge protector installed by an electrician costs about 300 to 700 dollars. It will not stop a direct strike, but it absorbs the surges that kill AC boards, pool pumps and appliances. Pair it with point-of-use strips for electronics.
