Car Dealers in St. Augustine, FL

How to choose a car dealer in St. Augustine

1. Price the car out the door, not by payment

Florida dealers may charge a dealer or documentation fee of any amount as long as it is disclosed, and locally 800 to 1,500 dollars is common. Ask for a written out the door figure that includes the fee, tax, tag, and title. Compare that number across dealers. Negotiating the monthly payment instead lets the finance office stretch the term and hide the real price.

2. Check the dealer license and reviews on the service side

Every dealer in Florida must hold a license from the state and display it. Beyond that, look at reviews that mention the service department and how the dealer handled problems after the sale. Buying from a store with a good shop in St. Augustine instead of across the county line saves you years of 40 minute drives for warranty work.

3. Get a pre-purchase inspection on used cars

Salt air near A1A, flood events, and sand in every seam make Northeast Florida used cars worth a closer look. Pay an independent shop 150 to 250 dollars to put the car on a lift. Check the title history for flood or salvage brands, and be especially careful with vehicles that came from coastal counties after a hurricane season.

4. Arrange financing before you walk in

Local credit unions in St. Johns County and Jacksonville routinely beat dealer rates for buyers with decent credit. Walk in with a preapproval and let the dealer try to beat it. Decline add-ons like nitrogen, paint protection, VIN etching, and most extended warranties unless the price is reasonable and you understand what it covers.

5. Be careful with buy here pay here lots

These lots along US 1 and SR 207 serve people who cannot get a bank loan, but the rates and prices are high and the cars are often older. If you go this route, read the contract for GPS trackers and starter interrupt devices, know the repossession terms, and ask whether payments are reported to credit bureaus so you build credit.
