Question 1

How much does physical therapy cost per session in St. Johns County without insurance?

Accepted Answer

Cash-pay physical therapy at independent clinics in St. Johns County typically runs $90 to $175 per visit, with an initial evaluation at $125 to $225. Hospital-based outpatient departments often bill more because of facility fees, sometimes $200 to $400 per visit before insurance adjustments. Many cash-based practices sell packages of 5 or 10 visits at a discount. Always ask for the self-pay rate even if you have insurance, because it can be lower than your in-network cost before you meet a deductible.

Question 2

Do I need a referral for physical therapy in Florida?

Accepted Answer

Florida allows direct access to physical therapy. You can be evaluated and treated by a licensed physical therapist without a physician referral for up to 30 days, after which a referral is needed to continue, with some exceptions for therapists holding a doctorate who meet additional requirements. Your insurance plan may still require a referral or authorization to pay for visits, so check your plan before booking. Medicare has its own rules; ask the clinic.

Question 3

How many physical therapy sessions will I need after a knee replacement?

Accepted Answer

Most patients in St. Johns County attend outpatient physical therapy two to three times a week for six to twelve weeks after a total knee replacement, so roughly 12 to 30 visits, often after a short period of home health therapy. Hip replacements usually need fewer visits. Your surgeon's protocol and your progress set the number. Ask the clinic to reassess you every few weeks so you are not paying for visits you no longer need.

Question 4

Does Medicare cover physical therapy in Florida?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Medicare Part B covers medically necessary outpatient physical therapy at 80 percent after the annual deductible, with no hard annual cap, though claims above a yearly threshold require extra documentation from the therapist. A plan of care must be certified by a physician or other qualified provider. Medicare Advantage plans may require prior authorization and limit you to network clinics, which is common in St. Augustine and Ponte Vedra. Ask the clinic to verify your coverage before the first visit.

Question 5

Is there pelvic floor physical therapy in St. Augustine or Ponte Vedra?

Accepted Answer

Yes, though the number of therapists trained in pelvic floor rehabilitation in St. Johns County is limited and waitlists can be several weeks. Pelvic floor therapy helps with postpartum recovery, incontinence, pelvic pain, and pre- and post-prostate surgery issues. Ask whether the therapist has specific pelvic health training and whether evaluations are done in a private room. Some women's health practices in Jacksonville also serve county residents.

Question 6

What is the difference between a physical therapist and a physical therapist assistant?

Accepted Answer

A physical therapist in Florida holds a doctorate or master's degree in physical therapy and is licensed to evaluate you, set the plan of care, and treat. A physical therapist assistant has an associate degree, is licensed, and provides treatment under the supervision of the physical therapist. Aides and technicians are unlicensed and may set up equipment or supervise exercises. It is fair to ask who you will work with on each visit.
