Which hospitals serve St. Johns County?

UF Health Flagler Hospital in St. Augustine is the county's main full-service hospital. Baptist Medical Center South sits just across the Duval line near Julington Creek and is the closest hospital for many northern St. Johns residents. Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Ascension St. Vincent's, and UF Health Jacksonville are within about 30 to 45 minutes of most of the county. Freestanding emergency rooms also operate in Nocatee and along CR 210.

Do I need a referral to see a specialist in Florida?

It depends on your insurance, not on Florida law. HMO plans almost always require a referral from your primary care doctor. PPO plans usually let you book a specialist directly, though the specialist may still want records from your primary doctor. Medicare Advantage plans vary. Check your plan documents or call the member services number on your card before booking.

Doctors in Jacksonville Beach, FL

Doctors in Jacksonville Beach

Finding a doctor in Jacksonville Beach usually comes down to who is accepting new patients, which insurance plans they take, and how long you will wait for a routine visit. Most offices in Jacksonville Beach belong to a larger health system, which makes referrals and records easier but can mean longer waits. Independent and direct primary care practices often offer same-week appointments. Call the office directly to confirm new patient status, since online directories are often out of date.

How to choose a doctor in Jacksonville Beach

Confirm they take new patients and your insurance

Call the office, not the insurance company. Ask whether the specific doctor is accepting new patients, whether they are in network with your exact plan, and when the first available new patient visit is. Many popular practices in Nocatee and Ponte Vedra have waits of two to four months.

Decide between a health system and an independent practice

A UF Health Flagler, Baptist, or Mayo doctor gives you a shared patient portal, in-house labs and imaging, and easy specialist referrals. Independent practices and direct primary care clinics tend to offer longer appointments and faster access. Neither is better for everyone, so think about how often you need care.

Check the Florida license and board certification

Look up the doctor on the Florida Department of Health license verification site for an active MD or DO license and any discipline. Board certification in family medicine or internal medicine can be checked through the certifying board. Nurse practitioners and physician assistants are licensed separately and are common in local primary care.

Ask about after-hours and same-day access

Find out how the office handles sick visits, whether you can message through a portal, and who covers nights and weekends. In St. Johns County a lot of after-hours care defaults to urgent care, so an office that holds same-day slots is worth something.

Consider the drive

Traffic on US 1, SR 16, and CR 210 at school and commute hours is real. A doctor ten minutes from home in Fruit Cove may serve you better than a slightly higher-rated one across the county in Vilano Beach, especially for frequent visits.

How do I find a primary care doctor accepting new patients in St. Augustine?

Start with your insurance company's online directory to get a list, then call each office directly, because directories are often months out of date. UF Health Flagler, Baptist Health, and Mayo all have new patient lines. Independent and direct primary care practices in St. Augustine, World Golf Village, and along CR 210 often have shorter waits. Ask to be put on a cancellation list if the first opening is far out.

How much does a doctor visit cost without insurance in St. Johns County?

A new patient visit at a primary care office typically costs $150 to $300 self-pay, and an established patient visit $90 to $200. Many offices offer a discount if you pay at the time of service. Direct primary care clinics charge a monthly membership, usually $65 to $120 for an adult, that covers unlimited visits. Federally qualified health centers in the county charge on a sliding scale based on income.

What is direct primary care and is it available near Nocatee or Ponte Vedra?

Direct primary care is a membership model where you pay the practice a flat monthly fee, typically $65 to $120 per adult, instead of billing insurance for visits. You usually get same-day or next-day appointments, longer visits, and direct messaging with the doctor. Several DPC practices operate in St. Johns County including the Ponte Vedra and CR 210 areas. You still want insurance for hospital care, specialists, and emergencies.

What is the difference between an MD, a DO, a nurse practitioner, and a PA?

MDs and DOs are both fully licensed physicians who completed medical school and residency. DOs have additional training in musculoskeletal manipulation. Nurse practitioners and physician assistants have graduate degrees and can diagnose, treat, and prescribe. In Florida, nurse practitioners who meet certain requirements can practice independently in primary care. Many local offices use a team, so ask who you will usually see.
