Do I need a referral to see a chiropractor in Florida?

No. Florida chiropractors are portal-of-entry providers, which means you can book directly without seeing a medical doctor first. Your insurance plan, however, may require a referral or prior authorization to pay for visits, especially under an HMO or Medicare Advantage plan. Check with your plan before the first visit so you are not surprised by a denied claim.

What is the difference between a chiropractor and a physical therapist?

Chiropractors are licensed physicians who focus on spinal and joint manipulation and often add soft tissue work and exercise. Physical therapists hold a doctorate in physical therapy and focus on movement, strength, and rehabilitation through exercise and manual therapy. There is overlap, and many St. Johns County patients see both. For a sudden joint restriction, a chiropractor is often a good start. For post-surgical rehab or weakness, physical therapy is usually the better fit.

Chiropractors in St. Augustine

Chiropractors in St. Augustine serve a lot of weekend athletes, golfers, and commuters with neck and back complaints. Most offices in St. Augustine offer a new patient special that includes an exam and first adjustment. Before you commit to a care plan, ask for the per-visit cash price, how many visits the doctor expects you to need, and whether they refer out for imaging or physical therapy when a case is not improving. Avoid signing a long prepaid contract at the first visit.

How to choose a chiropractor in St. Augustine

Ask what a typical visit looks like and how long it lasts

Some offices run a five-minute adjustment model with high volume. Others spend 20 to 40 minutes combining manipulation with soft tissue work, exercises, and advice. Neither is wrong, but you should know which one you are paying for before you book.

Be careful with long prepaid plans

A legitimate practice will re-examine you every few weeks and adjust the plan. Be cautious if you are asked to prepay for 30 or 60 visits at the first appointment, especially after a free spinal screening at a Nocatee or Durbin Park event. Ask for the cash price per visit instead.

Verify the Florida license

Look up the chiropractor on the Florida Department of Health license verification site for an active chiropractic physician license and any discipline. Certifications in sports chiropractic, Active Release Technique, or Graston are extra training you can ask about.

Ask when they refer out

Good chiropractors know their limits. Ask what happens if you are not better in a set number of visits, whether they order imaging, and whether they work with local orthopedists, physical therapists, and pain management doctors. An office that never refers out is a yellow flag.

If you were in a car crash, ask about PIP experience

Florida personal injury protection covers up to $10,000 in medical care if you are seen within 14 days of the crash and have an emergency medical condition designation. Many local offices handle PIP billing daily. Ask how they document and bill, and keep copies of everything for your attorney or insurer.

How much does a chiropractor cost in St. Augustine without insurance?

A standard adjustment at St. Johns County chiropractic offices typically costs $45 to $90 cash per visit, and a new patient visit with exam and X-rays runs $90 to $200, though many offices advertise a first-visit special between $29 and $69. Longer visits that include soft tissue work, dry needling, or decompression can run $100 to $175. Ask for the per-visit cash price in writing, and compare it to any package offered.

Does insurance cover chiropractic care in Florida?

Most commercial health plans cover a limited number of chiropractic visits per year, often 20 to 30, with a copay or coinsurance, and Medicare Part B covers spinal manipulation only, not exams, X-rays, or therapies. Florida auto PIP coverage pays for chiropractic care after a crash if treatment starts within 14 days. Coverage varies a lot by plan, so call the member number on your card and ask about visit limits and whether a referral is needed.

How many chiropractic visits will I need?

For a simple episode of low back or neck pain, many patients feel better within four to eight visits over two to four weeks. Chronic conditions and injuries may take longer. Be skeptical of a plan that prescribes three visits a week for several months before any re-examination. A reasonable office will set a short trial, measure your progress, and either continue, change the approach, or refer you to another provider.

Can a chiropractor help after a car accident in St. Johns County?

Chiropractors commonly treat whiplash, neck strain, and back pain after collisions, and many St. Augustine and Nocatee offices focus on this work. Under Florida's no-fault law you must receive initial treatment within 14 days of the crash for PIP benefits to apply, and full benefits require a licensed provider to find an emergency medical condition. Any licensed physician, including a chiropractor, can be your first visit. Ask the office how they handle PIP paperwork.
