How much does a dog dental cleaning cost in St. Johns County?

A professional dental cleaning under anesthesia at local clinics typically costs $500 to $1,000 including pre-anesthetic bloodwork, and extractions add $50 to $300 per tooth depending on complexity. Dental X-rays may be included or billed separately. Many clinics offer a discount during February, which is national pet dental health month. Ask for an itemized estimate, and ask what happens if the vet finds teeth that need extraction once the dog is under.

Are there low-cost vaccine or spay and neuter clinics in St. Johns County?

Yes. St. Johns County Pet Center in St. Augustine and local rescue groups periodically offer low-cost vaccine and microchip clinics, and First Coast No More Homeless Pets in Jacksonville operates a high-volume low-cost spay and neuter and vaccine clinic that serves many St. Johns County residents. Some feed and farm supply stores host mobile vaccine clinics on weekends. Schedules change, so check the organizations' websites or call ahead.

Veterinarians in St. Augustine, FL

Veterinarians in St. Augustine

Veterinarians in St. Augustine handle a steady stream of wellness visits, heartworm and flea prevention, and the usual Florida hazards: toad exposure, snake bites, heat stress, and skin allergies. Most clinics in St. Augustine book routine visits a week or two out and hold a few same-day sick slots. Ask about after-hours coverage, because overnight emergency care in St. Johns County is concentrated in a small number of hospitals and you may have to drive.

How to choose a veterinarian in St. Augustine

Find out who covers emergencies and after hours

Most general practices in St. Johns County close by 6 p.m. and refer emergencies to a 24-hour hospital. Ask which one, and how far it is from you. Driving from Crescent Beach to a Jacksonville emergency vet at midnight is a long trip with a sick dog.

Ask about pricing on common services up front

Prices for the same exam, vaccine, or dental cleaning vary by several hundred dollars between clinics in the county. Ask for the exam fee, vaccine prices, and a dental estimate when you call. A clinic that will not quote routine prices over the phone is a yellow flag.

Check whether the clinic is independent or corporate owned

Corporate-owned clinics are common in Nocatee, Durbin Park, and along US 1 and may offer wellness plans and extended hours, while independents often offer more continuity with the same vet. Neither is automatically better. Ask how long the veterinarians have been at that location.

Verify the Florida license

Florida veterinarians are licensed by the Department of Business and Professional Regulation, and you can check license status and discipline online. Accreditation by the American Animal Hospital Association is voluntary and indicates the hospital passed an outside inspection.

Match the vet to your animal

Most local clinics see dogs and cats. Birds, reptiles, rabbits, and pocket pets need an exotics vet, and there are only a few in the county. Horses and livestock in Hastings and Elkton need a large animal or equine practice, most of which make farm calls.

How much does a vet visit cost in St. Augustine?

A routine exam at a St. Johns County veterinary clinic typically costs $65 to $110 in 2026, with vaccines billed separately at $25 to $50 each. A sick visit with basic bloodwork often totals $200 to $400. Emergency hospital exams start around $150 to $250 before any treatment. Many clinics in Nocatee, Ponte Vedra, and St. Augustine offer wellness plans that spread annual preventive costs over monthly payments. Ask for an itemized estimate before agreeing to treatment.

Where is the nearest 24-hour emergency vet to St. Augustine?

St. Johns County has a limited number of emergency veterinary hospitals, with options in or near St. Augustine and in the Jacksonville area along the I-95 and Baymeadows corridors serving the northern county. Hours and locations change, so confirm with your regular vet which hospital they refer to and save the number in your phone. For suspected poisoning, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center and Pet Poison Helpline operate 24 hours and charge a consultation fee.

Does my dog need heartworm prevention year round in Florida?

Yes. Northeast Florida has mosquitoes nearly every month of the year, and veterinarians in St. Johns County recommend continuous monthly or injectable heartworm prevention for dogs and cats. Treatment for an established heartworm infection costs $1,000 to $2,500 and is hard on the dog, while prevention runs roughly $10 to $25 a month. Most clinics require an annual heartworm test before refilling prevention. Flea and tick prevention is also recommended year round here.

What should I do if my dog bites or licks a cane toad?

Treat it as an emergency. Cane toads, which are common in St. Johns County yards and near canals and ponds, secrete a toxin that can cause drooling, red gums, pawing at the mouth, stumbling, seizures, and death in dogs within minutes to an hour. Immediately wipe the gums and mouth with a wet cloth, pointing the dog's head down so water does not go down the throat, and go to the nearest emergency vet. Call ahead on the way.
